Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge Fast Facts
This wildlife refuge in excess of 43,000 acres is located southwest of Houston, Texas and is a bird photographer’s paradise. The visitor center is 54 miles from Houston’s Hobby airport. There are restrooms and drinking water at the entrance to the refuge. I would recommend you take your own drinking water as well for convenience while you are on the grounds and 7.5 mile gravel self-guided auto tour. A porta-potty exists on the auto tour route and there are sheltered picnic tables near the sanctuary entrance. There is an information pavilion next to the visitor center and a wheelchair accessible boardwalk overlooking a lake where wildlife can be photographed. A short section of the boardwalk is covered with seating available.

The Teal Pond Observation platform includes a viewing scope and the parking area has handicapped parking while the platform is wheelchair accessible. Another viewing platform exists at Rogers Pond.More than 400 species of wildlife exist within the grounds including over 270 species of birds. Wintering birds can exceed 100,000 of which about 40,000 are snow geese. On my visit in June of 2008 I was greeted by black and white ibis, egrets, herons, black necked stilts, and roseate spoonbills. Be mindful that alligators, rattlesnakes, and water moccasins call this area home. Mammals that also call the area home include: coyote, raccoon, bobcat, and armadillo. Two boat ramps are located within Brazoria NWLR. The Bastrop Bayou fishing area has a handicapped lighted fishing pier. While checking on some facts for this article I found an interesting section of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website which identifies wheelchair accessible wildlife viewing areas within Texas.
